Introduction

Learn about the anatomy and healthy function of the spine and then review common causes of back pain, and the strategies to educate your clients to minimise back problems happening or recurring. Using current research, you will learn to some basic movements and exercises that can be adapted to help your clients improve their back care. This course is designed to give you the confidence to speak professionally about what a healthy spine mean and build the skills to work with clinical professionals for the best interests and safety of the client or class member.

Final Assessment: A written assessment is required covering evidence of knowledge and application of knowledge obtained on the training day. This is typically submitted after attendance of the training course.

Hours Summary

Masters & Graduate Diplomas – Healthy Back

1 Day: 8 lecture hours,
Self-Study, Workbook Completion - 2 Hours,

Teacher Development - Total 10 Hours.
The Masters & Graduate Diplomas involve additional specialised education days.  These may not all be provided by your elected training centre at this time however all training centres are working towards offering all of the Diploma Content in time.

Notes:
Healthy Back Certificate:
Certificate of Achievement valid for 2 years with a requirement for ongoing education to maintain verification with 14 hours Teacher Development Hours each 2 year period.  No expiry once a full Masters or Graduate Diploma is achieved.  (When enrolled on any Diploma Course and actively attending the trainings your certificate will be renewed automatically.)
Foundation Diploma:   Some centres have a delivery format that has less Face to Face time due to local considerations.  When this occurs, the extra hours can be accrued through attendance of additional educational events in the subsequent months and years to qualify for the other levels of Diplomas.  Typically, a Foundation Diploma has less observed practice time and fewer tutor led group classes but educational content is not excluded.

  • Face to Face Tutor Time
  • A discussion on the role of a Fitness Professional such as a Pilates Teacher or Personal Trainer regarding spine health and the use of clinical professionals when clients have back pain or specific conditions
  • Anatomy of the spine and musculature structures critical to the spines function
  • Healthy function of the spine and common lifestyle and postural issues having a negative impact on its health.
  • Common injuries and conditions which are commonly encountered and their impact on the spines function
  • Typical movement modifications, plus purpose of adaptations and progressions for movements suitable for typical conditions with individual concerns addressed
  • Tools to help you educate the client to better take care of the back and spine.
  • Practical methods for assessing the general alignment of a client’s spine
  • Discussion of marketing yourself and further education requirements for specialisation

Support Materials

  • The student Handbook and Workbook are provided as downloadable PDF files to print at your convenience but required to be accessed either digitally or in printed format during your Face to Face tutor time. The Handbook includes detailed notes and diagrams relevant to the course topics.  Your Handbook also includes note pages for your completion during and after the education, for analysis and application of the Healthy Back knowledge.  The Workbook holds the Assessment Questions.  It is recommended you familiarise yourself with this material prior to attendance wherever possible.

Assessment

Assessment

  • Completion of a Workbook involving 10 questions asking for evidence of knowledge retained form the course.
  • The suggested period for the completion of the is one month from completion of the course. You have one year to successfully complete all assessment process after which MK Pilates reserve the right to request re-attendance on elements of the course and may apply charges for this and any re-assessments after the one year period is over.

NOTE: the assessment can be worked on consecutively with the assessment processes for any other MK Pilates courses. This is an assessment of working knowledge of general back health.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites

A working knowledge of basic anatomy is important.  It is also preferred but not essential that there is a background in body work through MK Pilates Matwork Part 01 or equivalent.  Teaching experience within general fitness or specialised subject such as, Dance or Yoga is also beneficial.  While not prerequisites, it is suggested that the other trainings within the Functional Anatomy Series are attended before attending Healthy Back and that Clinical Posture is attended after Healthy Back.
