PILATES PROGRAMMING FOR BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS
Breast Cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women and second most common cancer overall with 2 million new cases registered in 2018.
These shocking statistics suggest a growing number of our clients may present with
issues around treatment or post surgery concerns. A sensitive Pilates programme goes a long way to helping those diagnosed with breast Cancer to recover both physically and emotionally, boosting self confidence as well as coming to terms with any physical changes.
MIND & BODY
The mind/body focus of Pilates helps restore a positive body image often challenged following invasive treatments, chemotherapy and or radiotherapy. A feeling of disassociation from their body may be experienced when they needed to “switch off” to deal with medical intervention.
The Pilates Principles of Concentration and Precision encourage attention to movement quality that encourages healing both mental and physical.
“Exercising with Pilates has many benefits for those with Cancer”
• Improved Balance, Maintaining strong muscles, Ease nausea, Decrease fatigue
(US Cancer Society 2017)
CHANGES TO POSTURE
When surgery is needed clients may find their posture changes. Rounding in the upper back, limited range of movement in the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle may become noticeable. Ignored or neglected these physical change can bring about additional problems like back pain as well as reduced mobility and flexibility. These physical changes can also result in feelings of depression when a client feels there’s nothing they can do.
A Pilates programme will address these issues directly.
An important element a Pilates programme brings to a client post surgery is the growing knowledge through experience how improved quality of movement, range of motion, flexibility, strength and mobility brings about improved self esteem and awareness how great our bodies are at recovery when offered a system of exercise that is not aggressive or creates a feeling of competition.
